What it looks like

White Pattern is the pale side of a crested gecko's pattern: cream or white markings that follow the Flame or Harlequin pattern, described by where they sit, how much they cover and their tone. Foundation Genetics says cream is by far the most common shade, and that it runs all the way to a clean paper white.

On a pinned gecko, white pattern usually gives the pins their cream to white colour. Phantom can dull pale pattern, and some Tangerine lines show a pink tint in the pale areas, sometimes called Bubblegum. Several traits and selected backgrounds can add white, so a white-patterned gecko isn't automatically part of a named white project like Lilly White or Whitewall.

White and Orange Pattern make a Tri-Color

With both White and Orange Pattern the pattern splits into cream and orange.

Named combinations

Morphs that need this gene and at least one other.

  • Brindlequinadvanced

A Harlequin broken up by strong, brindled tiger banding into yellow, white and dark bands. Foundation Genetics defines it as a white-pattern Harlequin on a yellow base with strong tigering and lighter pinning, and calls it a combination rather than a single gene.

  • Bubblegum Pinktakes some work

A bubblegum pink pattern colour: Tangerine shifts white pattern toward pink, and Hypo lightens it further. AC Reptiles also uses Bubblegum for its own Tangerine line, and the pink can appear without all three.

  • Tri-Colortakes some work

Three distinct colour zones: white pattern, orange pattern and the base colour. Having both pattern colours does not guarantee three distinct colours will show.

With other genes

  • Snowflakeneeds it to show

Snowflake shows only where there is white pattern for it to grow from, so a gecko without white pattern can carry Snowflake without showing it.

  • Phantommutes it

Phantom mutes white pattern on the raised pin rows; on Phantom Pinstripes the white fades between tail and head.

  • Tangerinetints it

Tangerine tints white pattern pink, the bubblegum look.

  • Hypowhiten it

Hypo turns white pattern toward a clean paper white.

  • CreamsicleCombination

Creamsicle is an orange-toned gecko with contrasting pale pattern. Foundation Genetics calls it a long sought-after look that's hard to produce consistently, reached by more than one route, and where Creamsicle ends and other orange or pale names begin varies between breeders.

Notes

How it is inheritedFoundation Genetics proposes that white pattern is passed on as its own dominant trait, separate from orange pattern, so one gecko can carry and show both colours. Another view sees pale colour as something built up by selection over generations. Foundation Genetics also reports that a line can be pushed toward more white or more orange within a generation or two. Either way, white pattern doesn't fix how much of the gecko it covers, and it doesn't guarantee a Tri-Color.

Where breeders differWhether white pattern is one dominant trait or a colour built up by selection hasn't been settled. A gecko of unknown background can't be assumed to carry a particular white-pattern gene; its colour may simply reflect selection.

Where it came fromNo single founder is on record for this name. It is shared hobby vocabulary.

In Gecktopia

White Pattern is a strength in the game: an inherited amount of cream and white in the pattern, which varies from parents to offspring. A pairing preview lists it as a possibility rather than giving odds.

  • Passed on in the game as a strength rather than copies.
