What it looks like

Red Base gives a red body colour, and the shade varies a lot. Foundation Genetics describes reds from dark blood red and dirty red through fire-engine red and bright neon to pink and candyfloss pink, and puts much of that range down to other traits such as Hypo, Phantom and the pattern colours.

The shade can also shift as a gecko ages and as it fires up or down. Red geckos can wear white pattern, orange pattern or both, and Foundation Genetics notes it has proven hard to get rid of all the orange pattern in red geckos.

Notes

How it is inheritedRed Base is a red-toned base colour that breeders usually treat as recessive. A gecko can carry it without showing it, so colour alone won't tell you what a dark gecko carries, and two dark geckos can still produce red babies. It works the other way too: a reddish look on its own doesn't prove what a gecko will pass on.

Where breeders differHow Red and Black relate hasn't been settled. Foundation Genetics also describes rosy cheeks, called blush, as a sign that a gecko carries Red, but that hasn't been shown to be reliable.
