Entry 5Colour modifier
Cappuccino
Darkens the base to a rich coffee.
CAPPWhat it looks like
One copy of Cappuccino darkens the base to a rich coffee brown with a translucent look, and those geckos are healthy.
It shares a gene slot with Sable and Highway. One of each shows both at once: Cappuccino with Sable is a Luwak, Cappuccino with Highway is its own compound.
Two copies (Super Cappuccino) are extremely dark, often jet-black and nearly patternless. They are also the reason this gene needs reading carefully before pairing: see below.
Before you pair this
Two copies (Super Cappuccino) have documented health problems: reduced nostril size and difficulty breathing, and poor thriving. A study of about 100 of them found this consistently, and lower incubation temperatures reduce but do not remove it. Breeding for Super Cappuccino is not recommended. One copy carries no risk at all.
The series
Same animal, same seed. Only this gene changes. Open any one in the builder.
With another gene
The same gecko before and after.
With Highway, on the same slot
Highway is the third allele at this spot. A gecko with one of each carries no room for a second Cappuccino, and shows the bleeding back of a Highway over a coffee base.
Named combinations
Morphs that need this gene and at least one other.
Frappuccinotakes some work
Tan/white blend coloration. Coffee and cream tones mixed across body.
NeedsCappuccinoLilly White
Highway Cappuccinoadvanced
Compound heterozygote phenotype. Visual expression combines Highway and Cappuccino traits. Distinct from Super Cappuccino. Some animals exhibit nostril reduction.
NeedsHighwayCappuccino
Luwakadvanced
Unique coloration from Sable/Cappuccino allelic interaction. Distinct from both parent phenotypes.
NeedsSableCappuccino
Sorakadvanced
Intense coffee/cream/white coloration. Deeper than Frappuccino due to full Cappuccino expression.

Highwayshare one place on the chromosome
Highway and Cappuccino occupy the same genetic locus (SA/CAPP/HWY allelic complex). HWY x CAPP crosses do not produce Super Cappuccino, confirming the allelic relationship. Compound heterozygotes (HWY/CAPP) express as Highway Cappuccino, with documented nostril reduction and associated health risks in some individuals.
Sableshare one place on the chromosome
Sable and Cappuccino are allelic (same locus, different mutations). Sable x Cappuccino cross did NOT produce Super Cappuccino, proving they are separate alleles.
Notes
In the genetics dataProduces darker, rich coffee coloration with a translucent quality. Heterozygous animals show intermediate dark coffee coloring and are healthy. Homozygous Super Cappuccino exhibit significant genetic health issues: reduced nostril size causing breathing difficulties, and poor overall thriving. Part of allelic complex with Sable. Breeding for Super Cappuccino is not recommended.
Telling it apartCappuccino (het) animals appear darker and richer, coffee colored with a translucent quality, with healthy and normal thriving. Super Cappuccino (homozygous): extremely dark, often jet-black monochrome or translucent appearance with solid black eyes; visually striking but frequently exhibits reduced nostril size, breathing difficulties, and poor thriving.
On the evidenceSuper Cappuccino health study (~100 animals, Korea/US/UK): documented ~11% reduced nostril size, breathing difficulties, and poor thriving across the study population. Lower incubation temps (69-71°F) reduce but do not eliminate structural issues. Breeding specifically for Super Cappuccino is not recommended due to these consistent welfare concerns. Heterozygous Cappuccino animals are healthy with no associated risks. Source: Foundation Genetics Part 2.1.
HistoryCappuccino was initially confused with Sable; testing and breeding records clarified the distinction.
