Patternless

An expression of Phantom: little or no visible pattern, a nearly solid-coloured gecko.

What it looks like

A patternless gecko shows little or no obvious pattern, so the body reads as one fairly even colour. Up close there is usually a faint difference in shade between the back and the sides; Foundation Genetics says all patternless geckos show it, and a gecko where that difference stands out is often called a bicolour.

Patternless geckos come in every base colour, from reds and near-blacks to yellows that range from silver to mustard, or Cheeto orange with Tangerine. Faint traces of pattern can still show through.

Notes

How it is inheritedPatternless is an expression of Phantom: a Phantom with little or no visible body pattern, and Gecktopia treats any patternless gecko as a Phantom. Foundation Genetics puts patternless geckos down to Phantom muting the pattern colour on low-pattern flame or harlequin geckos, and calls a patternless gecko with a two-tone back and sides, the bicolor, a Phantom too. It passes on as Phantom does, as a recessive.

Where breeders differGuides have changed their minds here: an older Foundation Genetics edition listed Patternless as its own trait, while later editions treat it as a low-pattern Phantom.

Where it came fromNo single founder is on record for this name. It is shared hobby vocabulary, and an old name: Anthony Caponetto recalls first posting his Phantoms in the mid-2000s as 'Patternless Pinstripes', and renaming them Phantom after people objected that they weren't really patternless.

In Gecktopia

Patternless is its own recessive gene in the game, so the game can produce it: two copies clear the pattern from the whole gecko. Keeping it separate from Phantom is the game's choice.
