Entry 11Colour modifier
Sable
Lightens the base toward cream.
SAWhat it looks like
Sable makes the base lighter and creamy, with a white dorsum. One copy is a clear lightening; two (Super Sable) go extremely light, nearly cream.
It sits on one gene slot with Cappuccino and Highway, so a gecko carries at most two of those three between them. A gecko with one Sable and one Cappuccino shows both at once, which is the animal people call a Luwak.
Sable and Cappuccino were thought to be one gene for years. Breeding proved they are two different mutations at the same spot: a Sable paired to a Cappuccino never produces a Super Cappuccino.
The series
Same animal, same seed. Only this gene changes. Open any one in the builder.
With another gene
The same gecko before and after.
Sable and Cappuccino together: a Luwak
They sit on the same gene slot, so this gecko has one of each and no room for more. The lightening and the darkening land on the same animal and neither wins outright.
Named combinations
Morphs that need this gene and at least one other.
Highway Sableadvanced
Compound heterozygote phenotype. Visual expression combines Highway and Sable traits. Distinct from both simple Highway and simple Sable. Expression details still being documented.
NeedsHighwaySable
Luwakadvanced
Unique coloration from Sable/Cappuccino allelic interaction. Distinct from both parent phenotypes.

Cappuccinoshare one place on the chromosome
Sable and Cappuccino are allelic (same locus, different mutations). Sable x Cappuccino cross did NOT produce Super Cappuccino, proving they are separate alleles.
Highwayshare one place on the chromosome
Highway and Sable occupy the same genetic locus (SA/CAPP/HWY allelic complex). HWY x SA crosses do not produce Super Sable, confirming the allelic relationship. Compound heterozygotes (HWY/SA) express the Highway Sable phenotype.
Notes
In the genetics dataProduces lighter, creamy coloration with a white dorsum. Heterozygous animals show intermediate expression; homozygous express full Sable phenotype. Part of allelic complex with Cappuccino at the same locus. Sable x Cappuccino crosses did NOT produce Super Cappuccino, proving these are separate alleles despite occupying the same gene locus.
Telling it apartSable animals appear lighter and creamy, with a white dorsum. Het animals show subtle lightening. Homozygous Super Sable extremely light, nearly cream.
On the evidenceAllelic with Cappuccino (same locus, different mutations). First confirmed allelic complex in crested gecko genetics. Sable x Cappuccino cross did NOT produce Super Cappuccino, proving separate alleles. Source: Foundation Genetics Part 2.0, 2.1.
HistorySable and Cappuccino were initially believed to be different phenotypes of the same gene; testing confirmed they are separate mutations at the same locus.
